HOUSE OF NILAY is a collection of clothing and lifestyle items made of cotton which is stamped with wooden blocks. Block print is an ancient Indian craft in which patterns are stamped onto fabric and paper with wooden blocks. I became acquainted with this craft during my many travels through India. But I never thought of making this my job. Until my travel organization due to corona Namaste Travel came to a stop. Soon I got the idea to do something with block print textiles.
Blockprint textile is much more than a piece of stamped fabric. The craft is passed down from generation to generation and if you look closely at a piece of fabric you can see how complicated the process is. No piece of fabric is the same and it is never completely perfect. But that imperfection is precisely what makes it unique. I've always been drawn to it, to the colors and designs that are often inspired by nature.
House Of Nilay was therefore created in a difficult time in which our travel organization had to survive. Making the website, coming up with the collection.. it not only kept me positive but also my colleagues who like to think along and are so sweet to model the clothing.
For our collections we work together with a small family business in Jaipur, the Pink City! All fabrics are labeled in our own factory and the items are sewn in our own workshop. So we know exactly where and by whom our products are made. It is important to us that the employees work in good conditions and are paid a fair wage.
House of Nilay is still in development and together with the makers in India and our resellers we hope to bring this sustainable way of 'producing' clothing to the attention. By providing information about the product with every item of clothing or home accessory, we try to make you aware that a lot of time and attention has been put into making the product. So be careful with it!
Love,
Margaret
